Dubai United Arab Emirates, in the Arabian Peninsula, is the second largest developing city in the world after Shanghai, with 800 new residents a day — a cultural melting pot of over 70 nationalities. Dubai was a pearl trading centre until the 1930s, when it went into decline until the discovery of oil in the 1960s led to a sudden resurgence. Today, less than 3 per cent of Dubai’s revenue comes from oil; most of it derives from the fact that it is a tax haven. The city has become a byword for luxury living — a base for international businesses, and a hide-away for celebrities, rock stars, and shadowy millionaires, who come for an epicurean lifestyle in a wonderful setting of sandy beaches and desert landscapes.

Dubai City is a delightful playground for the western tourist, providing every conceivable form of leisure activity. Palm Islands is the latest city project, an ambitious development expected to be completed in 2007 — three man-made islands, each in the shape of a palm tree with a trunk, crown and fronds, all enclosed by a crescent breakwater, with luxury hotels, private mansions, restaurants, entertainments and diving sites. This massive undertaking can be seen from space.

There is an attractive ‘Old Quarter’, Bastakia, reached by abra (water taxi) — an area of narrow lanes with a distinctly Arabian Nights charm. The late 19th century ornate, court-yarded houses were originally the homes of Persian pearl and textile dealers. In contrast, the Burj Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road, due for completion in 2008, is a gleaming post-modern tower set in an artificial lake. It will be the tallest building in the world.
